Charlie Edwards, a friend of my father during the Second World War and after, received a write-up in the Herald Sun today. The article focused upon Charlie’s meeting with Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop while he has a POW on the Thai-Burma Railway as well as the forthcoming launch of an appeal to raise $200,000-00 for medical research via the Sir Edward Dunlop Medical Research Foundation. You can read the full article over at the Herald Sun.
Hat tip to Adele Brice and Adam Brice for the pointer to the article. Thank you!

My great uncle Leonard Metcalfe (an Englishman) was killed in 1942 in Malaya. He served with the 2/19 battalion. We have lots of information about him and I was wondering if Mr Edwards recalls him.

My Grandfather, Arthur George Costello served in ‘D’ Company of the 2/19 Battalion was listed as MIA following action at Parit Sulong, my research has led me to believe that he was one of the many wounded POW’s massacred by the Japanese. I travelled to Malaysia in 2012 and visited the location where my Grandfather lost his life, it was a very emotional and moving experience to be at the place where he and others fell.
Arthur changed his surname on enlistment, i.e. from Castelli to Costello, as he thought that he may be sent to the middle east and therefore if captured may have been viewed as a traitor by the Italian armed forces.
I caught the show tonight on the ABC and agree wholeheartedly with you, i.e. in regards to the diminished recognition given to this wonderful group of Australian men who suffered so much when compared to the recognition afforded to other equally brave groups of Australian men who saw action elsewhere where the outcomes were different.
If possible I would like to correspond with Charlie Edwards, my father ‘Keith’ – Arthur’s son, has been a keen and avid reader of all written material in relation to his fathers Battalion and the circumstances of his fathers’s death. If possible I would like to provide hime with an opportunity to possibly visit Charlie.
